Build a true sustainable
business, while helping others |
|
| |
You have heard about The New Green
Economy on TV, online and in the news. The world is Going
Green and there’s money to be made. The question is: Who
will receive these "profits"?
People, Planet and Profit.
In that order. It's our guiding philosophy in business.
We can help you build a caring and sustainable business model
and still develop a very rich and rewarding career.
But before I go into details,
allow me to provide you with some background.
|
That’s me, way back, with my first grade project. My name
is Joseph Winn and I have been an active environmentalist since
I was little more than 4 years old. I guess it was my calling.
Ever since I could talk, I have studied and read all I could on
environmental issues facing our cities, communities, countries
and planet.
As I grew, I had acquired a wealth of information, but felt I
needed a more hands on experience to truly appreciate the
problems and be able to focus on the solutions.
|
|
 |
I joined various environmental
organizations and was active in their initiatives to assist in
their causes on environment and wildlife. From working
with GreenPeace UM on environmental waste issues, to rescuing
stranded dolphins in the mosquito laden flats of the Florida
Keys, to participating in fish and environmental studies in the
US, Belize and the Galapagos Islands, it slowly became clear
what was truly happening.
One day while working
on my Masters project for Marine and Environmental Affairs it
suddenly dawned on me. While environmental groups had been
marching in the streets for decades warning of global climate
change and other impending environmental issues, and thousands
upon thousands of people had graciously donated their time and
money to these worthy causes, and governments had passed various
laws and rules, very little had actually been accomplished.
In fact, many environmental indicators had shown a marked decrease
since the environmental movement began.
Things were actually getting worse!
This realization was confirmed by Al Gore’s book and movie: An
Inconvenient Truth. |
| |
| It’s Business…Not Government |
| Al Gore’s book not only
portrayed the problems our civilization faces with global climate
change, but also suggested some possible solutions. While Big
Business was portrayed as the main cause of most environmental problems,
it was also purported to be the solution. The question came down
to profitability. Up until very recently, big business has fought
against any government mandates which forced them to develop more
sustainable business practices or manufacture more environmentally
friendly products, fearing that the additional costs would make them
uncompetitive or reduce their bottom lines. So what has changed? |
| |
| Surveys Don’t Lie |
Fueled by Al
Gore’s book and the global energy crisis, today there exists an ever
growing populace of people worldwide who are just starting to believe
that global climate change and other national and local environmental
challenges are real, and are willing to support companies in their
efforts to “Go Green”. Surveys from Intellitrends,
Harris, Neilsen,
Cone, Bentley College and others all have found that many consumers now take a
company’s environmental policies into consideration before doing
business or purchasing their product. In fact, the most recent
report from BBMG reported that 78% of consumers "reward" companies they
perceive as green and 55% actually "punish" those companies they feel
are not doing their part...and actually encourage their friends and
family to do the same!
These surveys have not gone unnoticed by big business who have begun to
invest heavily in Going Green. Apple invested heavily in a
marketing strategy of spotlighting their "greenest" line of computers. Bank of America has set
aside $20 Billion USD over the next ten years on their green
initiatives; Wal-Mart announced a $500 million USD investment in their
sustainability program; Clorox Company bought out natural products
company Burt’s Bees and began their new line of Green Works cleaning
products; and General Electric’s Ecomagination venture is so successful,
they currently have over $50 billion USD in backorders.
Today, Green means profits.
That’s what has changed. |

| Media |
| If you read a newspaper, watch
TV, listen to the radio, or go online you are already starting to
hear the charge. Here is an excerpt from an article published
in the Detroit Free Press:
“In one of the
most dramatic turnabouts in corporate America, previously
environmentally apathetic businesses of all sizes and in all
industries are rushing to portray themselves as Earth-friendly or
touting the eco-friendly aspects of their newest products.
Hardly a day
goes by without announcements hawking the latest green initiative,
new store or design. Corporate executives are flocking to
green-marketing seminars. Even the Business Roundtable, a group of
160 chief executives of major U.S. companies, recently sounded the
alarm about the need to reduce greenhouse gases.”
Green is no longer a fad…it’s a
trend, yet, surprisingly, only a very small percentage of companies
are participating in this green revolution. How can that be? |
| |
| Big Guys and Little Guys |
| Most of the media focus so far is on
either well funded start-ups or established Fortune 500 companies.
These companies have the assets and budget to employ and initiate
sweeping advancements and changes to their products and business
practices. But what about all of
those small and medium size businesses which compose over 90% of all
business entities worldwide? Seeing all of the
media on these large companies and start ups investing billions, many
small and medium size companies, including many businesses in your own
communities, feel shut out from the entire green process. They
simply do not have the budgets for these large investments, and,
although they would like to participate in helping their communities and
planet plus enhancing their marketing image and earning a share of the
booming green market, they do nothing. And that’s unfortunate for
all of us. |
| |
| Empower the Little Guy…and You |
| After analyzing what was happening in the
corporate world, I consulted with a team of professionals consisting of
educational and environmental experts in the academic sector, and
marketing, distribution and compensation specialists in the business
sector, who assisted me in developing a business plan – a plan we named
the Certified Approved Green Business program, that would enable and empower ANY
SIZE and virtually ANY BUSINESS to Go Green while offering individuals
the opportunity to become “Independent Consultants” who can build a
lucrative business and become part of the New Green Economy. The
plan is AFFORDABLE for any business so even the “little guy” can Go
Green. And the best part? These companies
are happy to open their doors to hear how YOU can help them...
I’ll come back to this in a moment.
|
| |
| Small Changes = Big Results |
| In order for the plan to work, it had
to be simple. Easy to understand, with step by step instructions,
consisting of simple changes in habits and practices that have a
measureable effect on not only sustainability, but Return on Investment
(ROI). Remember, altruism aside, it is
profit that is driving the green movement. We have
all read how a homeowner can make a simple change from incandescent to
CFL bulbs that will save thousands of watt/hours per household, and
provide a long term savings return on the initial investment. Such
an example of a transitional change also has indirect benefits: the CO2
reductions due to lower power requirements as well as a waste stream
reduction (CFL’s last 5-10 times longer than incandescent bulbs).
Now imagine this homeowner passing on that knowledge to their friends
and family. Small investment = large returns. That’s the basis
for our Certified Approved Green Business plan…but there’s so much more. |
| |
| Benefits to the Company |
| Just like the Big Guys'
expensive initiatives, our Certified Approved Green Business plan provides the
company with real, bottom line benefits, but without the major
investment. ..and we designed it to provide even more! Here are just a
few of the tangible benefits the company will receive: |
| |
 |
Healthier, cost-effective workplace environment |
 |
Increased employee productivity |
 |
Reduced employee turnover |
 |
Better customer/member attraction and retention |
 |
Enhanced marketing image |
 |
Community leadership |
 |
Revenue Opportunity |
|
| |
| Benefits to the Employees |
| We did not forget about the
employees. In fact, their participation is one of the innovations
of the Certified Approved Green Business plan, which motivates and mobilizes
employees to work as a team and take action in creating a greener
workplace environment. Employees not only receive the satisfaction
of doing their part but also receive valuable “GreenProfit Benefits”.
In addition, once employees are educated on sustainable practices, they
transfer these habits to their personal lives, which helps spread the
green word through the company’s customer base as well as the
employees' families and friends. |
